Fine Art Framing

Bynon Art Services offers a bespoke conservation framing and plinth making service.

Your artworks, by their very nature require special handling and care. This consideration starts with the work's method of display. Whether it is in a large traveling show or in a domestic house, the right framing can protect your artworks from irreversible damage caused by environmental hazards such as insects, incorrect temperature or relative humidity, indoor air pollution or the effects of light.

Our Fine Are Framing service complements our Microclimate Frame service and is intended for projects and artworks that require special consideration regarding preservation. Certain conservation treatments may degrade over the passage of time. Conservation methods and practices change and evolve with ongoing research in the industry. Therefore it is advisable to review the materials and methods of conservation utilized on the artworks in your collection to ensure they are properly protected.

Fine Art Framing Materials

When considering the right framing we pay careful attention to aesthetics as well as:

Matt boards - These along with the tabbing tissue used to adhere the artwork to the matt board, should be archival quality. Matt boards should be acid free and lignin free. We use 100% cotton matt boards for mounting works on paper. We use Japanese hinging tissue and papers for an archival and reversible method of attaching an artwork to its mount.

Backing boards - These provide protection against damage caused by abrasions, physical shock or moisture. We can employ various methods to backing artworks depending on each work's individual needs. Solutions can range from incorporating the original backing board with any existing provenance information attached, to the application of marvalseal barriers and new polypropylene boards.

Glazing - Natural and artificial light are harmful to many materials but are particularly damaging to works of art on paper or textile. For this reason, there are many different "museum quality" glazing options, from UV glass to plexiglas. Each option comes with comprehensive technical information and offers specific advantages and disadvantages to be considered on a case by case basis.

Frame - The frame is, after all, the main supporting structure to the artwork. The size of the molding in relation to the overall size of the frame must be considered as its strength will depend on it. Some woods exude a higher concentration of harmful organic acids and/or formaldehyde than others but this factor also depends on the age of the wood. To prevent any contact between a potentially harmful wood and the artwork we often insert inert protective barriers such as polypropylene inserts or marvalseal foil lining.

Microclimate Frames

A microclimate is an enclosed environment immediately surrounding an artefact. A microclimate can be created and monitored in sealed frames and storage cases for transport. Creating and maintaining a microclimate in a frame or storage case is easier, more accurate and far more cost-effective than modifying the environment in an entire building, gallery, transport vehicle or room.

One of the main services we provide is that we create microclimates for paintings on panel. This procedure can be adapted to work with other framed artworks i.e. canvas, paper, parchment etc.. that are in need of microclimate protection.

We install artworks into microclimates in their ideal environment, this is either where the artwork has been exhibited for a given time (on site) or in a studio where the temperature and humidity can be controlled and adjusted to meet the needs of the installation process.

Many works of art are sensitive to environmental changes. Fluctuations in ambient temperature and relative humidity produce widely recognized and well documented detrimental effects to many materials. Maintaining a reasonable environmental stability around a work of art is essential to its preservation.

In providing microclimate protection, our aim is to prevent sudden and dramatic changes to the immediate environment surrounding an artwork. There are many situations that may cause sudden changes in temperature and humidity including: loss of power to HVAC systems, nearby construction, natural disaster, unreasonable use of exhibition space and last but not least, travel.
