Mark Bynon’s grandfather, H. Stanley Bynon, established H.S.Bynon & Son Picture Restorers in 1946 after he left the Royal Air Force and was one of the few founding members of The Association of British Picture Restorers. H. Stanley Bynon studied at Armstrong College, now Newcastle University, under Professor Hatton before working at Mawson, Swan and Morgan, Newcastle Upon Tyne. He then started working on the restoration of paintings.

Mark’s father, Denis H. Bynon, joined the firm in 1948 also after leaving the RAF. Stanley Bynon died in 1983 and Denis Bynon retired in 1999 after more than 50 years service as a paintings restorer working throughout the British Isles. Both H. Stanley and Denis were Fellows of the Association of British Picture Restorers (ABPR), now The British Association of Paintings Conservator – Restorers, (BAPCR).

Today Bynon Art Services continues the dedication to art conservation started by Mark’s father and grandfather, with a commitment to providing the highest standard of services to our clients.

As the director of a small conservation lab serving 10 historic house museums, one of the best ways to manage priorities is to work with trusted colleagues like Bynon Art Services. I chose BAS to treat the original carved and gilded frame for the Portrait of Anne Ditchly by Sir Peter Lely (English, c.1680) because of their particular expertise with similar complex treatments. I appreciate Mark’s pragmatic approach to every detail and value his professional advice. The work was outstanding, and the painting and frame once again hang prominently in the Morning Room at The Breakers. I look forward to working with BAS again.
